DBN Battle of Valmy

Last night at Peeler's house we had a small DBN game depicting the battle of Valmy between the Prussians and the French. 9 victory points was the target, the French began the game in control of the 3 villages meaning that they had 3 victory points to begin with.

The two armies started fairly close together so it wasn't long before casualties started to appear. The artillery on both sides started to inflict casualties on the cavalry.

Both sides continue to inflict casualties from firing and the French lose one unit of cavalry. Meanwhile both sides clash on the French right flank.

the French cavalry charge the Prussian cavalry and destroys one unit of cavalry, but is then overrun by the rest of the Prussian cavalry.

Both sides continue to battle hard in melee but in the end the French come out victorious.

Thanks to Tim and Peeler for a good game with tea and cake.

A weekend away in Sheffield

I spent the weekend in Sheffield for two days of gaming related fun. Baccus were having their open day on the Saturday showing how they produce the figures and giving a brief history of the company. We were shown round by Peter who explained how no metal is wasted because they recycle all the unusable stuff and all the figures that aren't quite good enough are melted down again to be cast again which is why their figures are such good quality.
After the tour I went for a pub lunch with Peter and his family which was really nice and just a short walk from where I was staying. In the evening we all met up again at a pub and then went for a curry which I enjoyed although I did just have my usual Korma, afterwards Igor gave me a lift back to the B&B where I was staying where after watching a couple of episodes of The Big Bang Theory I settled down for a good night's sleep.

The gaming day was being held just round the corner from the train station which was really handy for me as it meant that I didn't have to worry about leaving early to find it.

At the gaming day they had a table set up with some painting stations showing people how easy it actually is to paint 6mm figures
It was really good because they asked which period you were interested in then provided you with enough figures to produce a base and showed you shortcuts you could take and gave tips on how to enhance the look of the figures. I painted up a base of Napoleonic Russians in greatcoats to get me used to painting 6mm Napoleonics and I'm pleasently surprised how they turned out.

I was so pleased with them that I just had to treat myself to a pack of them from the Baccus trade stand which was conveniently located right next to the painting workshop.
In the entrance there was an impressive looking Towton game.
There were lots of other great looking games which really showed how good 6mm can look.

It really was a great weekend and I had loads of fun over the weekend, so thank you to everyone involved and I look forward to going again next year.

The Darklord Strikes back - Return of the blog

It's been nearly two years since my last blog post. Time to kickstart the blog with some figures I'm painting for my birthday game next month. This is my first human group for my Occult Wars game. Basically Occult Wars is a ruleset which allows you to control groups of either humans, vampires, werewolves or daemons. Or if you prefer you could have a group of zombies as opposed to having them just wandering round the board looking for any living thing they can find to take a bite.

So here are my first humans photographed next to some flat-pack buildings from 4ground.

Border Reiver - Newcastle

Last week a small group of us from the Yorkshire Coast Wargamers traveled up to Newcastle for the Border Reiver show. There was Tim, Stuart and myself, unfortunately Peeler was unable to come as he had to work. I organised the game which was a fantasy game called Hordes, basically it's a big brutal beasty bash set in a fantasy world. I must say a big thank you to Phil from Forge Games for lending us his gaming board for our games, thoroughly nice guy and it was nice to have our game set up in front of his stall mainly because he sells the figures we were using. Here's a little battle report from one of the games.

The two forces set up in opposing corners of the board. Stuart was commanding the Khador which are the ones in red and I was commanding the Legion of Everblight in blue.

Stuart won the initiative and begins to move his units forward to attack.

Unfortunately for me my beasts spent a number of turns attacking each other due to being frenzied. Then one of my little beasts goes into a frenzy and decides to have a go at one of Stuart's Warmachines which is then backed up by another. Miraculously the little beast survived.

The rest of my army begins to get involved and begins to push the enemy back towards their deployment zone.

I then moved my warlock round to try to eliminate Stuart's Warcaster and win the game

Unfortunately it all seems to be part of Stuart's cunning plan and his warjack breaks away from combat and....well I think you can guess the rest huge mechanical monstrocity vs a human, there was only ever going to be one result.

A little victory shot at the request of Stuart.

Here are some pictures of some of the other games. Was also good to meet up with Norman again.

We set off just before 3:00 as we hadn't had anything to eat (we decided not to pay £3 for a burger) instead we headed off to the Metro Centre for something to eat and jolly nice it was too. We then amazingly managed to go into a model shop there without spending anything (shock horror). We got back to Tim's house and had a chat and cuppa then Stuart and I went home. We all agreed it had been a good day out and are looking forward to the next one.

Sheffield Toy Soldier show

Last week a group of us from the YCW went to the Sheffield Toy Soldier show. There was Tim, Peeler Jordan and myself. On the way through we stopped off at the highwayman on the A64 for our usual morale boosting brekkie :) Fully fed and ready for the day ahead we carried onto the venue for the show only missing it once so it was pretty good going.
The show was really good and was slightly different to your standard wargames show in that there were different stalls selling items other than figures. Our game was set up at the back of the hall.

The food was really good, in my opinion it was much better than the usual stuff you get from other shows. The show was really busy early on but I was amazed how quickly it went quiet. It did allow me to get a good deal on a box of terrain for my fantasy games. I got this whole box of terrain for £7

We left after 3:00 to set off back home after a really enjoyable day, we got back to Tim's just after 5:00 and stopped for a cuppa and a natter. I got home just after 7:00 so I got back in plenty of time for Top Gear, just to round off a really good day. Thanks to Peeler, Jordan and Tim for a great day. I will definately be visiting this show again in the future.

Elvington 2010 show pics

First up I'd like to apologize for the lack of activity on the site lately, have just been too busy to put anything up. Secondly I'd like to welcome all the new followers, thanks for joining and hope you enjoy the site.
Right, onto the main subject of this post. The Elvington show was on the 8th and 9th of May. The YCW bunch went there both days to put on a series of games demonstrating the range of stuff we do.

We started the day off in the usual manner of refuelling ourselves for the day ahead with the traditional "fat boy's breakfast".

We then set about getting the table ready, here's Tim's "Toy Soldiers" game, notice the Briton's cows in the field, a nice little touch I think.

This was an interesting little game near to ours, it aimed to compress the whole of WWII into a tactical map based game, quite nifty.

Here's a few of the other games that were being played in the hanger.

Back on our table we set up a range of other games including, WWI, Colonial, Fantasy and ACW

Here's the backdrop to the show, rather impressive, I can't think of any other shows with a backdrop to match.
To cap off what was already a great day, our group was awarded runner up for the best participation game. Here's Tim accepting the prize.

and finally a close up of the trophy.
Well, I hope you all enjoyed the pictures and I will try not to leave such a large space of time between posts next time lol.
